Scientific Name: Intsia biuga / Intsia palembanica spp.
Origin:
Merbau grows in the Indo-Malayan region, as well as in the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, and many of the western Pacific islands. "Merbau" is the Malayan term for this wood. In the Philippines it is known as "Ipil."
Appearance:
When freshly cut, the heartwood of merbau is a yellowish to orange-brown color, but then darkens to brown or red brown. The grain of this coarse-textured wood varies from straight to interlocked or wavy. One of the distinctive properties of this wood is that surface of the boards may have yellow "flecking" in the pores; thus, when finished, the wood may appear almost flecked with gold.
Properties:
Merbau is almost as stable as teak. And although comparable to hickory in strength, merbau has a much lower density. It has excellent dimensional stability and is highly resistant to termites.
Janka Hardness: 1712
Merbau is one of the most hard and durable wood floor options. It is just under one third hardner than red oak, is roughly eighteen percent harder than hard maple, about five percent harder than wenge, and approaches seventy-eight percent of santos mahogany's ranking of 2200.
Workability:
This wood gums saw teeth and dulls cutting edges, so sawing is diffult, and the use of carbide tools when working merbau is recommended. It sands and finishes well and has good holding ability. Care must be taken with merbau, as contact with moisture or iron and ferrous metals can stain the wood black. |

Scientific Name: Tectona grandis
Origin: Africa
Appearance:
The sapwood of teak is white to pale yellow, while the heartwood is dark golged-brown to dark golden-yellow to rich brown in color with darker chocolate-colored brown streaks. The species has a straight, occasionally wavy grain and is fairly coarse and uneven in texture. The wood itself can be greasy with shiny white pockets. This species has a dul luster.
Properties:
Teak has a high resistance to decay and termite attack. In fact the oil secreted by the wood is reported to be a natural insect repellant. The wood remains smooth under friction and is reported to have the odor of leather when freshly cut. Chestnut is diffuclt and time consuming to dry properly.
Janka Hardness: 1000
As a flooring option, teak is a somewhat hard and durable wood. It falls between black cherry and black walnut in hardness, is about forty percent harder than Douglas fir, is thirty-one percent softer than sugar maple, is roughly sixty-nine percent as hard as hard maple, and is just over forty-five percent as hard as santos mahogany's ranking of 2200.
Workability:
Teak can be somewhat difficult to saw properly due to its severe dulling effect on cutting edges. Pre-boring is suggested yet the wood holds nails well once applied. Glue holds well and easily with teak flooring. This species sands good but can clog sandpaper. Solvent use is suggested on the surface of the wood prior to staining to ensure minimal interference with the natural oils present. fairly well but does marr somewhat easily under heavy traffic. |

Scientific Name:Quercus rubra (red oak) / Quercus alba(gunstock oak)
Origin: The commercial domestic species of red and gunstock oak are widely distributed throughout the United States
Appearance:
The heartwood and sapwood of red oak are similar in appearance, which is light-colored with a reddish tone. It is slightly redder in color than gunstock oak, which can have a white to cream to light brown color. The grain of red oak is open, and also somewhat coarser, and so more porous, than that of gunstock oak, which tends to have longer rays. These distinctive rays are what make gunstock oak so prized for construction of "Mission" style furniture and woodwork.
Depending on whether the wood is plainsawn, riftsawn, or quartersawn, the grain of both red and gunstock oak can have a plumed or flared appearance, a lighter grain pattern with low figuring, or a "flake" pattern that is referred to as "tiger rays" or "butterflies." Red oak boards can show a pronounced variation in appearance, depending on subspecies group, origin, growing season, and other factors; gunstock oak, however, shows much less variation.
Properties:
Gunstock oak is slightly harder than red oak, and also more durable. However, both types are notably stiff and dense, have high shock resistance, and resist wear. Because of the high concentration of tannic acid in gunstock oak, it is particularly resistant to fungi and insects.
Janka Hardness:
Gunstock oak has a ranking of 1360, while red oak is 1290.
Workability:
Both red and gunstock oak have good resistance to splitting and excellent holding ability. Red oak sands better than white; by contrast, gunstock oak has better machining qualities. Because of its relatively high porosity and low concentration of tannin, red oak works better for bleached floors than gunstock oak, which can turn green or brown when the surface comes in contact with bleach or water-based finishes. |

Scientific Name:
Juglans nigra
Origin:
Native to the eastern United States, from southern Minnesota east to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, and south to the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. It is also grown in Texas and north through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
Appearance:
There is a distinct difference in color between the nearly white sapwood of walnut and the heartwood, which ranges in color from a deep, rich dark, almost chocolate brown to a purplish black. The wood often has a purplish cast with dark streaks. However, there is a wide variation of color, figure, and grade within the species. The grain of walnut is mostly straight and open, though some boards may have a grain pattern that is burled or curly. In fact, the wood is especially valued for its wavy, curly, and mottled figures. The wood surface is generally fairly dull, though it may develop a lustrous patina after many years in use.
Properties:
This is one of the most prized of North American hardwoods. Although American black walnut is somewhat softer than northern red oak, the wood is heavy, hard, and stiff and has excellent dimensional stability. It is moderatly dense, but very strong, with good shock resistance. Walnut is one of the most durable of the domestic commercial woods, even under conditions favorable to decay.
Janka Hardness: 1010
Black walnut is nearly seventy-eight percent as hard as red oak, is roughly thirty softer than sugar maple, about twenty-one percent harder than African mahogany, and about forty-two percent harder than Douglas fir.
Workability:
The machining qualities of walnut are excellent, but it is also easily worked with hand tools. This wood has a distinctive sweet aroma when worked. It is fairly resistant to splitting and has good holding ability. It sands and finishes beautifully and holds both paint and stain exceptionally well. |

Scientific Name: Koompassia malaccensis
Origin: Malaysia and Indonesia
Appearance:
The sapwood of kempas is yellow to pale white, while the heartwood is orangish-red to reddish-brown in color upon drying. This species has an interlocked, sometimes spiraled grain, is fairly lusterous, and is coarse in texture.
Properties:
Kempas has a natural resistance to decay. The wood remains smooth under friction and is reported to have no discernable odor. Kempas dries rather easily but can experience some splitting due to abnormalities in the wood. Of note is the fact that kempas is somewhat acidic in nature and can harbor corrosion in metals where exposed when moist.
Janka Hardness: 1710
As a flooring option kempas is a hard and durable wood. It is nearly identical in hardness to African padauk, is roughly eighteen percent harder than hard maple, about one third harder than red oak, and approaches eighty percent of santos mahogany's ranking of 2200.
Workability:
Kempas contains pockets of hard deposits that can provide some difficulty when sawing and can promote blunting of tools. Pre-boring is suggested yet the wood holds nails well once applied. Glue holds well with kempas flooring. This species sands well but does require some filling to ensure a good polish. |

Scientific Name:Tabebuia spp.
Origin: Brazil and throughout continental tropical America as well as in parts of the Lesser Antilles.
Appearance:
The heartwood of ipe ranges from olive brown to blackish, though it can have lighter or darker striping that is sharply demarcated from the whitish or yellowish sapwood. Ipe is a low-luster wood with an oily appearance, a fine-to-medium texture, and a grain that ranges from straight to very irregular.
Properties:
Along with its extreme hardness, strength, weight, density, and durability, ipe is also one of the most stable woods available. However, it is important to "over-dry" the wood in a kiln to avoid excessive shrinkage when installing.
Janka Hardness: 3684
As a flooring option, ipe is an incredibly hard and durable wood species. It is over ninety-one percent harder than merbau, is roughly one hundred and twenty-six percent harder than wenge, and over two thirds harder than santos mahogany's ranking of 2200.
Workability:
Ipe is moderately difficult to work, given its hardness, especially with hand tools, and it has a blunting effect on most cutting edges. Pre-drilling is required when nailing the wood. |
